Week 3: Mid-Point Reflection

Week 3... I'm still a vegetarian (for 5 days a week) yay! But now, I just do not eat meat for 2 days of the week instead of the weekend, so I guess I kind of messed up? Other than that, I still need to work on finding organic, local foods to eat instead of just the nicest vegetables I see. I need to READ LABELS. So my week 4 is going to be just that. Because I want to be as sustainably impactful as possible during this project and I want to be a more sustainable person, I want to accomplish my goals as much as possible. Also, remember in week 1 where I said I was going to compost or finish my food? Well I have been doing that, but only for the days I'm vegetarian (whoops). But those have mainly been when I go out to get, so I guess I need to actually stop going out to eat because it causes various other problems for this project too (like not knowing if food is organic or  local). If the project ended today, I think I would have a hard time to actually be a vegetar...

Week 2: I love cheese

Guys, guess what? I love cheese! It has been my saving grace this week. My lunches have mainly been mac and cheese, and well dinners have not been, but don't worry, they were still vegetarian! I have made sure that my food has been local too. The cheese I bought is also made locally; it's from Bellevue (though I don't know if it is organic). I also only went out to eat one time this week, which was way better than last week when I went out to eat three times. By eating locally, I can cut down on the distance that food travels, which is on average 1,500 miles (1), or flying from here to here to Nebraska, which produces .406 tons or 368,317 grams (.406 x 907185) of carbon dioxide (3), which is about 812 pounds (36,8317/0.05) which is how much 4 baby elephants weigh!  Though this week I flopped. I ate chicken and it wasn't the weekend yet. I was hungry and it was just there. Maybe it was because I ate meat on the weekend and then completely forgot that I w...

First Week: I kinda did it?

Hi, I'm Nat and this is my blog for APES. I had to do a blog to document how I am trying to be more sustainable and to do that, I chose to be a vegetarian and only eat local vegetables. I would like to become vegetarian because I tend to eat a lot of meat when compared to vegetables and that meat than more energy to be prepared than vegetables. When looking at my ecological footprint (which I found using this), if I kept with my current diet, it would take 3 earths to sustain my lifestyle but if I became vegetarian, it would cut it down to 2.5 earths. In fact, food production is the cause of 25% of greenhouse emissions (Plumer, 2016), and even contributing a bit to lessen it could help the efforts of reducing global warming. If everyone were to have a plant-based diet, greenhouse gases emissions would even be reduced by 70% (Fabiano, n.d.). Also, cows happen to produce a lot of methane (70-120 kg per year), a greenhouse gas which makes a 23 times more negative effect...
